Intense without being jammy, ripe yet elegant, and multi-layered, offering layers of brambly red berries, chocolate, espresso, scorched earth and spices, this ’11 Masseto reflects the typicity of Bolgheri weather in its concentrated palate. Like its French counterpart, Château Pétrus, Masseto derives from soils that are predominantly clay, Merlot’s preferred soil. Divided into three separate sections, each portion of the vineyard parcel has historically contributed something essential to the wine: Masseto Junior provides the base; Masseto Medio or Centrale contributes tannins and strength; and Masseto Alto imbues the wine with its aromatic signature. As pleasurable as is its palate, the mouth-feel of the ’11 Masseto is divine--supple, velvety tannins, piquant minerality and deft freshness make this a mesmerizing wine. Approachable early, the ’11 Masseto will still age beautifully.
