DESCRIPTION OF THE PINOT NERO OF VIE DI ROMANS
Pinot Noir from the Friulian winery Vie di Romans is an elegant version of the great Burgundy red. It is a wine clearly inspired by French models also in its aging, which includes the classic 12 months in barrique. For several years in the Friuli region, work has been carried out to enhance Pinot Noir as an identifying wine of the territory and there are already many producers who have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of this demanding and difficult to manage vine. In the area of Mariano del Friuli, Pinot Noir has found a cool and breezy climate and soils suitable for expressing itself on interesting qualitative levels. Thus it shows a refined, fresh and delicate profile, which offers aromas of small red berries and delicate spices.
Pinot Noir wine was born in a land basically of whites. The Friulian winery Vie di Romans has, in fact, become famous for a series of prestigious labels of the best white grape wines of the area. The estate has ancient origins, dating back to the early 1900s and today covers a total of about sixty hectares in the Isonzo Valley, planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Malvasia. However, a small Pinot Noir vineyard was built a few years ago with the aim of verifying the adaptability of the Burgundy red to the microclimate of Mariano del Friuli. The first results have been encouraging and although the vines are still very young, they are starting to produce grapes with intense aromatic features, which give fresh and elegant wines.
The Pinot Nero Vie di Romans was born in the Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte area. It is a young vineyard, just over one hectare, planted in the Burgundian style, with high planting density and low yields. The soils are quite deep with abundant skeleton and a matrix composed of silt, sands and clays rich in minerals. The vinification takes place in steel at a controlled temperature, with a maceration on the skins for a couple of weeks. The wine ages for 12 months in oak barrels, 8 months in steel tanks and completes the refinement with 15 months in the bottle. The color is bright ruby red and the bouquet opens on fragrant notes of small berries, delicately spicy hints, undergrowth nuances, notes of bitter cocoa and leather. The sip is pleasantly smooth, with a medium-structured body and fine tannins. The finish is fresh, long and savory.
