Melannurca Campana IGP

The Apple Annurca, is a fruit and vegetable product with Protected Geographical Indication, typical of the lands of Campania. It has a uniform red color, called the queen of apples, it is the only apple with southern origins.

Of a smaller size compared to other types, the annurca is famous for its crisp and firm flesh, very juicy and pleasantly acidulous and aromatic, it is very fragrant, and considered a very tasty fruit.

This excellent red fruit has an extremely smooth and waxy skin, it is also characterized by a faint and short stalk that, when the apples are ripe, failing to support the weight, breaks, causing the fruit to fall on the ground. To avoid dents or injuries, growers prefer to harvest the fruits that are not yet fully ripe and continue the phase in special melai. Stretched out on the ground, the Annurche are periodically turned over, until, once they are ready, they have acquired their natural red color and can therefore be placed on the market.
Harvest still unripe during the month of October, it is kept in melai for about two months, so around mid-December it will be bright red and ready for consumption, it can be kept until summer following.

The areas where this fruit is traditionally cultivated are Giugliano and Campi Flegrei in the province of Naples, the Vales Telesina and Caudina in the province of Benevento, Maddalonese, Teano and Aversa in the province of Caserta. Particularly appreciated in Lazio and Campania, it is progressively conquering the rest of Italy for its goodness.
This fruit contains a good percentage of vitamins, especially A and C and malic acid, the natural acidifying compound responsible for the slight sour taste of the apple; there is no lack of fibers and mineral salts such as iron, phosphorus, sulfur and potassium as well as fructose which, having a low glycemic index, does not negatively affect blood sugar and indeed is an excellent product indicated for diabetics.
The annurca apple can be used for the preparation of excellent desserts remembering that, if very cooked, it performs a laxative action while, on the contrary, if raw it is an excellent astringent.

The Melannurca Campana IGP is the last arrival at OIP stock, it is one of the most renowned and fine italian apple varieties, with a crunchy pulp, pleasantly acid and juicy. The color is lively red, the stalk small and soft, its coloration is due to a characteristic process, that is to say the redding on the ground in the so called “melai”, pieces of land covered by soft material (pine needle mostly) organized in order to protect them from the excessive solar irradiation. The production and safeguard area includes 137 Campania cities, where the consortium controls and certifies the authenticity and the the processes established by the IGP disciplinary. On the historical side it was well known since the Romans, indeed it was inserted it in many painting and praised by Plinio il Vecchio in his manuscripts. This kind of apple is not only rich in vitamins, minerals and fibers, regulating the intestine activity, but also in phenol compounds, which, in a research made by the university Federico II of Naples, in the Melannurca have shown to be powerful antioxidants able to halve the oxidative damages in the epithelial gastric cells and act against free radicals.
